Le Seven Sisters Cliffs fanno parte di un magnifico tratto di costa tra Seaford ed Eastbourne a sud dell’Inghilterra, a circa 100 km a sud di Londra ed a 30 km ad est di Brighton. Sono quindi una meta perfetta se desiderate fare una gita di un giorno partendo dalla capitale inglese. Visitare le Seven Sisters significa ammirare uno dei panorami costieri più iconici e spettacolari d’Inghilterra. Sono un’oasi di tranquillità per coloro che cercano di sfuggire al trambusto della vita cittadina ed assaporare un pò di vita rurale; offrono infatti bellissime passeggiate ed una natura incontaminata.
Quando si deve scegliere un hotel per un’occasione speciale ho notato che spesso le persone si dividono in due gruppi principali. Il primo gruppo comprende coloro che amano i design hotel dallo stile minimal-chic, dotati di tutti comfort moderni e tecnologicamente avanzati, magari con una bella piscina panoramica. Al secondo gruppo appartengono coloro che cercano luoghi unici, dalla forte personalità, edifici storici con caratteristiche originali e comfort tradizionali, come poltrone di velluto davanti a grandi camini in pietra, soffici tappeti e ricche tappezzerie. Chi mi conosce sa che io faccio parte decisamente del secondo gruppo. A volte preferisco rinunciare a qualche comfort (come per esempio l’ascensore) per poter trascorrere una notte in un luogo dai pavimenti scricchiolanti. Se anche voi fate parte (almeno occasionalmente) del secondo gruppo, allora vi consiglio di continuare a leggere.
In questi ultimi anni, da quando Marco ed io ci siamo trasferiti a Londra, cogliamo ogni occasione per girare la bellissima campagna inglese, di cui, come sapete, sono innamorata. Durante questi nostri week end, ogni tanto, ci concediamo qualche lusso. E cosí mi sono chiesta, cosa ci può essere di piú romantico che trascorrere una notte in un vero castello?
Molti viaggiatori si limitano a visitare le famose Cotswolds. Ma proseguendo un poco oltre verso nord, addentrandosi nelle Midlands, e’ possibile scoprire alcuni gioielli della campagna inglese decisamente meno conosciuti ed altrettanto affascinanti.
A mio parere ci sono due cose fondamentali che bisogna portare con sè in viaggio: la curiosita’ ed il tempo.
Anglesey Abbey è una splendida country house a breve distanza dalla città di Cambridge. Il suo aspetto ed i suoi interni sono ricchi di fascino e raccontano storie antiche. Ho avuto modo di visitarla durante un week end trascorso nell’East Anglia. Questa zona, poco nota al turismo italiano, è ricca di tesori e meraviglie naturalistiche e merita di essere esplorata. Ma torniamo alla protagonista di questo post: Anglesey Abbey. In origine un’abbazia, venne trasformata nel ‘600 in residenza di campagna. I cambiamenti storici e sociali e gli altissimi costi di mantenimento portarono, come accaduto a moltissime altre residenze simili, ad un decadimento generale dell’edificio, che all’inizio del ‘900 si ritrovò in uno stato di abbandono quasi totale.
A volte è facile dimenticarsi che l’Inghilterra non è solo Londra. La campagna inglese è tra le più gradevoli e suggestive che io abbia mai visitato. Si possono fare deliziose scoperte allontanandosi pochi chilometri dalla metropoli londinese. L’East Anglia è una zona di cui fino a poco tempo fa sapevo poco o nulla: è una regione affascinante e facilmente raggiungibile in circa un’ora da Londra e comprende le contee del Cambridgeshire, Suffolk e Norfolk. Cambridge è la cittadina più famosa ed importante di quest’area, nota in tutto il mondo per le sue università.
